Huub Bogaers (1957)
Portrait
by M. A. Pepers
Huub Bogaers is a painter and religious educator born (1957) in Tilburg, in the southern Netherlands. Raised in the Roman Catholic Church, he is active in various evangelical outreach and missionary organizations. He holds an M.A. in Cultural Studies from the Catholic University of Brabant in Tilburg, and earns his living both by painting and by teaching RE. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous Dutch churches and galleries.
Mr. Bogaers resides in Eindhoven with his wife and two children. Further information about the artist and his work is available on his website: http://www.dse.nl/~sbogaers/schilder"My interest in drawing and painting developed during my time at secondary school. In that period I took part in a group exhibition at the city theatre in Tilburg, and exhibited works in a number of other locations.
In 1978 I won a place at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's Hertogenbosch. A number of works from that period can be seen on this site. A year later, I decided to move on to the Catholic University of Brabant, where I graduated in cultural studies. Looking back, I realise that I found the Academy's emphasis on design restricting. I was, and still am far more interested in art itself and its cultural context.
I continued to paint throughout my years at university. I particularly enjoyed working with water colour, a technique I was introduced to at the Academy and that suits me well, in that it leaves room for spontaneity and experimentation, and is a particularly good medium for the suggestion of space. The challenge of creating a sense of space within a relatively small area continues to inspire me. Landscapes and abstract landscapes repeatedly form the logical basis for the expression of space of which I am so fond. A number of such landscapes were painted during a visit to Israel shortly before the Gulf War. Over a period covering several years I also painted landscapes in England. Further landscapes were painted in South Africa during a study trip in October/November 2000, while spring 2001 saw the production of a series of "abstract landscapes" .
In 1986 the Christian faith became very important to me, and that faith has been finding increasing expression in my paintings. Take, for example, the series based on the words spoken from the cross Crosswords that took shape during Lent 2001, and has been growing since. These paintings were originally intended as illustrations for a sermon, but grew into works of many disciplines: a performance including music, live-painting, and a powerpoint presentation. A website; a CD, boxes with travel-altars, paintings in various sizes from 10x15 cm (4"x6") to 3x5 meter, objects consisting of sunflower stalks and paper.
Examples of my work can be seen
at the "Kunstenaar en Konsument" art libraries in 's Hertogenbosch en
Eindhoven and the art library belonging to Johan Schot in Eindhoven, as well as
in the Tina Skukan gallery in Pretoria, South Africa. I seek to show my work in
environments where people go to to be inspired and grow".
