2008

° In spring and summer of 2008 the public toilets project in Lean was carried out with succes. We have finished building 4 blocks with public toilets in this fisherman village. Further information on this you will find under project Lean.

° As usual we gave direct-aid in the form of first aid or taking care of neglected wounds or giving some aspirin. If things were too bad we transported the patient to the doctor in Culik  (10 km).

° While we were working on the project there was an outbreak of Mutaber in the region that had killed already over 60 people and filled up the hospitals. We learned that Mutaber was a highly infectious disease that causes heavy diarrhea and thus fast dehydration. It was caused by Coli-bacteria in well- or river water used for human consumption, and not boiled long enough to kill all bacteria. There exists a simple and cheap remedy to prevent bacteria to survive. It is called caporit-powder and it costs Rp15.000 (ca Euro 1,10) per small bottle. One bottle a week would keep every well bacteria-free. The disease was closing in, and in Aas, a neighboring village, it killed already one person. We reacted immediately by buying enough Caporit to keep all 30 wells in the village clean for the next two months.

° We bought 15, (200 Ltr.) oil drums, cut them in halve, painted them orange and put a slogan: LEAN BERSIH (Lean clean) on it and placed them along the main road. On both entrances of the village we hung banners with the text LEAN BERSIH, ITU SEHAT (Lean clean, which is healthy).
read more about the project in the PROJECT LEAN section of our site.

° During the dry season, Made went weekly with the pickup van, from Amlapura to Seraya, to bring fresh water to the village of Seraya. In seraya is NO water anymore during dry season.

° We founded a small women league  called ORGANISASI PEREMPUAN di LEAN (OPL).
They will occupy themselves with information and education on every subject and we will try to support them financially.

° At the end of 2007 Wayan Ashi finished her studies at the university. She studied for 4 years and achieved to pass exam. She is now fully first degree Indonesian language teacher. Study costs about 1750 Euro per year. We have a number of (female) candidates for a university study. If there are visitors to our site, someone alone or together with friends, whom want to take the financial responsibility for a 4-year university education, we like to make contact between them and the candidates.

° Ofcourse a lot of childeren have been provided with uniforms etc. to be able to go to school this year. Daphne will be going back to Bali in May 2009, she will make a list with the childeren who use our fund, so you can meet the kids!

2007

2007 school toiletsThe toilet building of the school has been realised in 2006 /2007. On the photopage you will find a small impression. Also a detritus place has been build, where organic and non-organic detritus are collected and separated .
Due to the commitment of the teachers, there hygienic lessons are given now on the school and also information concerning the environment.

afvalIn February we have, among other things, donated a bicycle to the school of Lean: With other organisations from Amed and Bunutan, we have set up an action there against the trash roaming everywhere. The school children of Lean got for each garbagebag filled with plastic, which they had to bring to school, a ticket for a lottery, where beautiful prices could be won.
This action was a LARGE SUCCESS! After 2 days already a lorry load of platics layed in front of the school.

2006 / 2005

Thanks to two donations of 500 euro and many other and smaller donations, in the beginning 2006 it was possible to give the school materials for the construction of a toiletbuilding with 6 toilets and associated water supplies. This building was ready in 2007.

Due to our efforts and, not in the last place, the flow of letters that have been sent by Made Kaler and the head of the school, leaded to the fact that now also the indonesian authorities are prepaired to offer some help. This way the educational tools and the books are on an acceptable level now and a number of repairings to the schoolbuildings have been performed. Also there are still some promises of aid open for the next years. At present the school counts almost 300 students and 5 full time teachers and 5 part-timers and stagaires are working there.

Bunutan projects

operation
Made na de schildklier-operatie

In a number of cases we have assisted to individual people within the framework of health care. These were:

  • a uterus operation concerning a tumour
  • a theroid gland operation concerning causing major breathing difficulties and locking of the oesophagus
  • eye operation at a little girl of 10 whom would become blind if not operated.
The poor parents already saved more than half of the costs of this operation.
  • eye operation at a fisherman who can now fish again and can maintain its family.
  • And finally the medical care of a fisherman man who had been lost during a storm and after 4 days floating in the ocean on his turned boat had washed ashore on the neighbour island Lombok.

When we were on bali in 2005, there dominated a very contagious eye sicknesscalled: Conjunctivitis. In itself not real seriously but if not treated it can have serious consequences. We have supplied eye drops on wide scale, but in fact for such cases something with more structure must happen. The total expenditure to health care amounted to that year was 1250 euro, which we have paid from our own pocket, and has not been paid from the funds. But we can't spend private amounts like that each year... therefore PLEASE help us with this. No help means often death or permanent handicap.
